Wednesday, April 22, 2020
On Wednesday, April 22, 2020 an announcement was made regarding two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in pet cats in New York from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the United States Department of Agriculture National Veterinary Services Laboratories.  The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) maintains its current guidelines in regards to pets and COVID-19.
-Animal owners should always practice good hygiene when interacting with animals; including washing hands before and after interactions, handling animal food, waste, or supplies.
-Until additional information can be determined about the virus, animal owners who are positive with COVID -19 should restrict contact with pets and other animals. The AVMA recommends having another individual care for your animals. For animal owners with a service animal or no other options, a facemask should be worn and you should wash your hands before and after interactions with animals.
-Pets should not interact with people or other animals outside the household. Continue to maintain social distancing standards when walking your dog outdoors and avoid areas (such as dog parks) where a large number of individuals and dogs can gather.
-Routine testing for COVID-19 in pets is not recommended.
-There is no evidence to suggest that domestic animals that may be incidentally infected by humans play a role in the spread of COVID-19.
